Volunteer Opportunities

If you like having fun and meeting new people, we encourage you to become a volunteer at the Great Lakes Science Center. You don't have to be a scientist to be part of our team!

We have volunteer opportunities in the following areas:

  • Visitor and School Engagement
Volunteers in our visitor and school engagement department engage guests in the center’s galleries including the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, BioMedTech Gallery, Steamship William G. Mather and more. Volunteers assist visitors of all ages to gain an understanding of science concepts by facilitating hand-on-activities, informal demonstrations with our mobile cart activities or formal demonstrations on stage. Volunteers are asked to make a minimum commitment of one 4-hour shift per week for 3 months. Some college preferred.

  • Guest Services
These volunteers enrich the experience for our visitors by answering questions, providing information and directions, as well as checking tickets and answering phones at the information desk and ticket checking locations. Great Lakes Science Center asks volunteers to make a minimum commitment of one 4-hour shift per week for 3 months. Volunteers must be 17 years of age.

  • Science Camp
Science Day Camp volunteers help facilitate camp activities and operations. Volunteers monitor groups of campers and act as role models for appropriate behavior and safety. Camp volunteers must be 15 years of age and have completed the eighth grade. The deadline to apply for Summer Science Camp is May 1, 2013.

  • Survey Corps
Volunteers work with a short survey to gather information on our visitors’ experience. This research provides important information about our visitors. Volunteers are asked to commit to one 3-hour shift per quarter. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Administrative and Clerical Support
Projects include data entry, packet assembly, mailings and shredding. These projects are only available on a limited basis and are done Monday – Friday during business hours.

  • Facilities and Maintenance
Help with painting, electrical, plumbing and other small repairs, plus help with moving materials and furniture as needed. Volunteers must be 18 years of age and capable of lifting 50 pounds.

  • Teen Customer Service Leadership Team – Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition
This volunteer creates a warm and welcoming impression to guests visiting Great Lakes Science Center and Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition. The volunteer will communicate exhibition rules, distribute boarding passes, collect tickets and direct guest to the exhibition entrance. The volunteer will also assist guests to answer questions about the exhibition and Great Lakes Science Center. Volunteers may also assist guests exiting the exhibition with way finding and audio tour collection. Volunteers must 15 years of age and have completed the ninth grade. Application deadline is April 6, 2013.

Volunteers must be at least 15 years of age and have completed eighth grade. Some opportunities require additional experience and education. All applicants are interviewed to ensure a comfortable fit for both the volunteer and the Science Center

Please note some volunteer opportunities may not be available at the time you apply. If you are interested in learning more about our program(s) or to find current volunteer positions, call the volunteer office at (216) 696-5339 or email volunteer@glsc.org.
