CLEVELAND STATE UNIVERSITY HOSTING 58TH ANNUAL
NORTHEASTERN OHIO SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR
March 7th, 2011 CLEVELAND (March 7, 2011) The Northeastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair (NEOSEF) will be holding its 58th annual fair March 14 - 17 at Cleveland State University. This fair is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for young scientists and engineers to showcase their skills and talents in an effort to win cash, recognition and an opportunity to compete internationally.
Students in grades 7-12 from public, private and parochial schools in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit counties will compete by category and grade level. During the four-day event, approximately 600 students from more than 100 schools in those counties set up their science fair displays, discuss their projects with more than 300 judges and compete for more than $20,000 in prizes.
Students at the fair compete in nine categories that are subdivided by grade levels. NEOSEF awards one 1st place, and multiple 2nd place, 3rd place and honorable mentions per subdivision. One of the most rewarding aspects of NEOSEF is the opportunity for the students to discuss their research with local scientists and engineers.
NEOSEF then selects students to move on to the next levels of competition, The International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and Society for Science and the Public Middle School award (SSP). NEOSEF selects up to four 9-12th grade grand prize winners to attend ISEF where they compete with almost 1,500 students from all over the world for more than $4 million in scholarships and prizes.
NEOSEF winners often continue to excel in these next levels of competition. Last year, two students representing Northeast Ohio at ISEF won awards. John Boykin from St. Peter Chanel High School took 4th place in the Engineering: Materials and Bioengineering category and won a trip to Washington D.C. to participate in the People, Prosperity and Planet Design Competition, which was sponsored by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Anriudh Krishna from Solon High School also took 4th place overall in his category; Medicine and Health Sciences.
Judging will take place March 15 from 3:15 5:45 p.m. The public will be able to view the projects on March 15 from 6:30 9 p.m. and March 17 from 3:30 6:30 p.m. The awards ceremony will be March 17 from 6:30 9 p.m.
