GREAT LAKES SCIENCE CENTER, HOME OF THE NASA GLENN VISITOR CENTER, CELEBRATES ITS 16th BIRTHDAY WITH FREE OMNIMAX® MOVIES ALL DAY

CLEVELAND (July 6, 2012) – Great Lakes Science Center is celebrating 16 years of leading informal science education with a very special treat for visitors – free OMNIMAX movies all day!

Vouchers for free admission to Flying Monsters and To The Arctic will be distributed when the Science Center opens at 10 am on Saturday, July 21 and will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Guests must purchase Great Lakes Science Center general admission to redeem their movie voucher. The voucher for the free movie only valid on July 21.

“We’re marking an important milestone as we celebrate 16 consecutive years of inspiring young minds through fun, interactive experiences,” said Dante Centuori, director of creative productions, Great Lakes Science Center. “And since we know how much our guests enjoy OMNIMAX films, offering free movies all day are a fun way to commemorate the occasion and spark scientific interest.”

• Witness the Big Science Show – Sweet 16 Birthday Salute!
Watch a large-scale spectacle of science as our wild staff educators perform incredible experiments that defy gravity – and common sense – featuring a 16 Mentos & Diet Coke Salute, 16 Exploding Watermelons Salute, 16 Mini-Rocket Launch Salute and 16 Liquid Nitrogen Dump Salute!

• Observe the Gumdrop Bridge Design and Build Competition
Watch as the best and brightest representatives from local science and engineering companies compete to build the perfect bridge using only toothpicks, Chuckles® candy, Twizzlers® licorice and gumdrops! Then the fun really heats up when the competition begins and a motorized LEGO® vehicle crosses each bridge. Watch as additional weight is added to the vehicle during each round of competition. Can you guess which bridge will remain standing at the end?

• Taste Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream
This isn’t your typical sweet treat – it’s a science experiment that you can eat! See our staff put on gloves and goggles and dramatically mix liquid nitrogen with everyday kitchen ingredients to make edible ice cream. Beware of the brain freeze!

• Take the Oobleck Challenge
Have you ever wondered what it is like to walk on water? Now is your chance! Take part in our oobleck challenge and see if you can run across a pool of this fluid-like substance without sinking!

• Meet the Frog Keeper!
Hop in and explore our TOAD-ally cool exhibition, Frogs! A Chorus of Colors, and meet the frog keeper who takes care of the frogs every day! Watch the keeper feed some of the 70 live frogs on display from around the world, like the Chinese Gliding Frog, Amazon Milk Frog, Fire-bellied Toad and Smokey Jungle Frog.

• Decorate Cupcakes
Show off your creativity and add your very own culinary touch to everyone’s favorite birthday treat with rich frosting and colorful sprinkles! While supplies last.

• Hungry? Have a Picnic Outside!
Enjoy the views of North Coast Harbor while eating lunch or a snack! Hotdogs, corn on the cob, chips, soda and snow cones will be available to purchase outside at the food cart. If you’re looking for a sweet treat afterwards, step back inside and visit our Edy’s ice cream stand on the lower level, directly under the escalator!

• Just for Members: Science Scavenger Hunt and Ice Cream Social!
Bring the family and explore every nook and cranny of the building during our exciting members-only science scavenger hunt. And afterwards, be sure to stay for the ice cream social! $7 per person.
