Girls Go! Science Session Descriptions
PolyOne: The Impact of Polymers
From airplanes to chewing gum – It’s all about polymers! Polymers are all around us and impact our lives every day. From the toothbrush you used this morning to your cell phone’s protective cover, from bicycle frames to wind turbine blades, from medical catheters to automotive electronics, applications of polymers can be found in nearly every industry imaginable. Learn how chemistry and engineering come together as we create polymers in the lab, and take a stab at designing the right plastic material for real-world applications!
Cleveland Clinic: Perioperative Nursing
Join the Cleveland Clinic as we introduce you to the nursing profession and what it means to be a Perioperative nurse. Participants will have the opportunity to rotate between different hands-on, interactive perioperative stations where they will get to dress as a member of the surgical team, gown and glove up ready for surgery, view surgical tables up close and have the opportunity to handle and learn about different surgical instruments. Put your new skill to the test as you participate in a MOCK CODE with a Simulation Manikin. This SIM MAN will talk, have vital signs, and will crash, becoming unstable after surgery. Participants will have the chance to help rescue the SIM MAN, perform Basic Life Support (BLS) shock his heart, and get a stable airway by intubating him.
The Lubrizol Corporation: Exploring Materials Science
From creating new materials to testing how they work, explore the chemistry and physics involved in materials science! Create and play with bio-based substances, learn how friction creates engineering challenges, and design a lubricant to reduce friction and save energy. Experiment with liquid nitrogen to see what very cold temperatures do to materials, and learn how scientists are exploring the materials of the future!
Rockwell Automation: Girls Go! Automation
Automation and engineering go hand-in-hand—from robotics, to roller coasters, to designing new products that make the world go ‘round! Join us for hands-on demonstrations and lots of fun as we explore the importance of industrial automation in today’s world. Learn how the fields of engineering, software and firmware design, manufacturing, and technical instruction and writing can be occupations girls can thrive in! Come program our confetti launcher, build a prototype sailboat for manufacturing, study the steps necessary to control a Ferris wheel ride, and learn about a material handling system and how engineers troubleshoot problems and pitfalls in writing programs to control it, all the while learning how industrial automation plays a major role in the job market and how you can be a part of it!
Cleveland Metroparks Zoo: Zoo Science!
At the Zoo, science happens every day. Explore through hands-on activities how science is used in three different career areas of the Zoo, from Conservation Education to Animal Shows to Animal Husbandry. Participants will have the opportunity to be engaged in inquiry-based exploration of how education staff interprets animal information for our guests. Test your skill as you train an ‘animal’ for a natural behavior in the way that animals at the Zoo are trained to perform in our shows. Finally, explore Species Survival Plans and the genetic complexities of deciding which animals should be bred.
