Girls Go! Science Session Descriptions
Rockwell Automation: Girls Go! Automation
Automation and engineering go hand-in-hand – from robotics, to roller coasters, to designing new products that make the world go ‘round! Join us for hands-on demonstrations and lots of fun as we explore the importance of industrial automation in today’s world. Learn how the fields of engineering, software and firmware design, manufacturing and technical instruction and writing can be occupations girls can thrive in! Come program our confetti launcher, build a prototype sailboat for manufacturing and study the steps necessary to control a Ferris wheel, while learning how industrial automation plays a major role in the job market and how you can be a part of it!
Cleveland Metroparks Zoo: Zoo Science!
At the Zoo, science happens every day. Explore through hands-on activities how science is used in three different career areas of the Zoo, from Conservation Education to Animal Shows to Animal Husbandry. Participants will have the opportunity to be engaged in inquiry-based exploration of how education staff interprets animal information to our guests. Test your skill as you train an ‘animal’ for a natural behavior in the way that animals at the Zoo are trained to perform in our shows. Finally, explore Species Survival Plans and the genetic complexities of deciding which animals should be bred.
Cleveland Botanical Garden: Plant Science is BotaniCool
We interact with plants all day and depend on them for some of our most vital needs. Spend some time with the experts from Cleveland Botanical Garden and learn what’s inside leaves, see some crazy seeds, and have a blast learning about the natural world around us.
Cuyahoga Community College: Ohio Rocks! How Works of Mother Nature Reveal Themselves
There is a lot more to Ohio then what meets the eye. What we see on the surface has been shaped by millennia of events such as volcanoes, continent collisions, rivers and ice. In particular, rivers and streams are dynamic and ever changing and one of the most modified features of the Earth’s geology. Rivers and streams are massive and delicate at the same time. Join us to look at the geology of the Great Lakes, how a river moves, changes, and can easily be harmed. Play with a stream table, an environmental landscape, and do water testing.
National Weather Service: Today’s forecast is…
Do you find yourself checking the weather all the time? Do you look forward to summer thunderstorms and winter blizzards? You may have a future in meteorology! Come learn about all things meteorology-related with the National Weather Service. In this workshop, we will teach you the basic tools and skills necessary to become a “weatherwoman.” You’ll even get to create your own weather forecast!
