ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Explore the life and mind of Charles Darwin, whose theory of evolution by natural selection was so revolutionary that it forever changed the perception of the origin and nature of our species.

Darwin kept his theory secret for 21 years. This engaging exhibition goes back to the beginning and examines how Darwin’s groundbreaking ideas took shape. On view during the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, this exhibition offers a fascinating collection of specimens, artifacts, manuscripts and memorabilia related to one of the most influential scientists the world has ever known.

  • Experience the wonders Darwin witnessed on his five-year voyage to South America, the Galápagos Islands and beyond.
  • Examine fossils, beetles, butterflies and moths like those collected by the naturalist himself, and see the magnifying glass he likely used to study them.
  • Touch amazing reproductions such as the giant glyptodont skeleton, a prehistoric armored mammal.
  • Visit an elaborate reconstruction of Darwin’s study at Down House, where he proposed his theory of evolution by natural selection and wrote the book the Origin of Species.
  • Discover a colorful montage of silk orchids, a plant family that fascinated Darwin.

Darwin is organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York (www.amnh.org), in collaboration with the Museum of Science, Boston; The Field Museum, Chicago; the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, Canada; and the Natural History Museum, London, England.
