Boy Scout Programs


Did you know that Great Lakes Science Center has fun programs and workshops specifically designed for Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts? Whether you’re coming on a group visit, spending the night at one of our cool sleepovers or enjoying one of our workshops, you’ll learn about science and have fun at the same time!

Science Center Sleepovers (Wolves, Bears and Webelos)
Boy Scout ONLY Nights.

Ever wonder what it’s like to spend the night in a museum? Here’s your chance! Come explore the Science Center after dark, interact with hundreds of exhibits, visit the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, watch a special OMNIMAX movie on our giant screen, participate in fun hands-on activities and science demonstrations, and then grab your sleeping bag and spend the night! Robotics Sleepover for Boy Scouts
Friday, February 22
6 pm

Join us for a night of robotic-themed fun! Using the latest in LEGO NXT technology, spend a portion of the evening designing, building, programming and challenging other robots in a series of mini-competitions that will test your speed, accuracy and ability. Spend the other portion of the evening engaged in a science show, exhibit exploration and much more! Afterwards, enjoy the OMNIMAX movie, Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag, and explore the museum after dark. $39 person. Register at 216-621-2400. All youth 18 and under must be accompanied by a Scout Leader or adult for these events.

Journey into Space Sleepover for Boy Scouts
Friday, April 26
6 pm

Learn about stars, meteors, comets, black holes and more! Build and launch a rocket, view a real moon rock, train to become an astronaut, sample “soil” from Mars, and experience the STARLAB Planetarium. Learn about all things space in the first phase of our brand-new NASA Glenn Visitor Center galleries and be prepared to be blown away with the OMNIMAX movie, Hubble. $39 per person. Workshops

Scientist Badge Workshop for Webelos
Saturday, February 23
10 am – noon

Learn about Bernoulli's Principle, Pascal's Law and Newton’s three laws of motion as we explore water and air pressure, experience the difference between chemical reactions and physical changes, launch a rocket and more! Meets all requirements for the Webelo Scientist Activity Badge. $12.

Science Badge Workshop for Cub Scouts
Saturday, February 23
1 – 3 pm

Discover the scientific method and put it to the test as you experiment with building a simple motor, learn about solids, liquids and gases and much more! Meets all requirements for the Cub Scout Science Belt Loop and Pin. $12.

Weather Badge Workshop for Cub Scouts
Sunday, March 10
10 am – noon

Bottle a tornado, capture a cloud and build your own weather tools. Learn the weather lingo and try your hand at predicting the weather as you become a master meteorologist. Meets all requirements for the Cub Scout Weather Belt Loop and Pin. $12.

Astronomy Badge Workshop for Cub Scouts
Saturday, April 13
10 am – noon

From glowing constellations and black holes, to red giants and white dwarfs, learn to identify constellations, construct a star map and take a guided tour through the night sky in our STARLAB Planetarium. Learn the steps to become a master astronomer and explore the first phase of our brand-new NASA Glenn Visitor Center galleries! Meets all requirements for the Cub Scout Astronomy Belt Loop and Pin. $12.

Space Exploration Badge Workshop for Boy Scouts
Sunday, April 14
2 – 3:30 pm

Create your own Mars Rover or Moon Lander, design a lunar outpost, get in-depth with the International Space Station and more! Finish the day by exploring the first phase of our brand-new NASA Glenn Visitor Center galleries! Meets all requirements for the Boy Scout Space Exploration merit badge except requirement 3. $12.

Robotics Badge Workshop for Boy Scouts
Saturday, April 27
10 am – 3 pm

Complete the Robotics Merit Badge while using the latest LEGO NXT technology. Use sensors and motors to design, build, program, and test a robot to navigate an obstacle course or crush your opponent in battle! Pre-requisites: 7. Requirements met during workshop: 1-6. $25.

Each workshop is tailored to help Scouts complete all or most of the required activities for a badge and includes admission to Great Lakes Science Center and NASA Glenn Visitor Center. Boy Scout badges are not included with these workshops. All youth 18 and under must be accompanied by a Scout Leader or adult for these events. One chaperone is free for every five paying Scouts. Admission for additional chaperones is $3 per person.
